NPN Volunteer Parent Profile: Carolyn

Written by: Carolyn Lloyd

NPN is really dedicated to connecting you with the resources you need to navigate parenting in the city.  For more than 34 years we've been creating groups to give local parents the social support they need. In order to showcase some our amazing volunteers that lead these groups (from nearly 30 neighborhood and special interest groups), we thought we'd give you the opportunity to get to know some of them. Meet the chair of our Same Sex Parent Group, Carolyn.
Name: Carolyn
Group: Same Sex Parents
Kid/Age: Will, age 7 months
Spouse: Rebecca
Pets: 3 cats - Eddie, Babou, and Max
When did you join NPN?: Only recently!
Neighborhood: Irving Park
Favorite Chicago activity: Chicago Botanic Garden, or anything involving delicious food.
Why do you volunteer for NPN?
I joined NPN in the hopes of finding other families to connect with.  In particular, I hoped to find some same-sex parents we could get to know.  It's important for our son to know that there are families that look like his. When I saw that the same-sex parents group was quiet, I decided the best thing to do would be to volunteer.  Hopefully we can create spaces for our families to get to know and support each other.
What is your favorite thing about NPN?
As someone who is relatively new to the city of Chicago, it's nice to have a resource to connect me with people and events that help support my family.
Anything else you'd like to share about yourself, your family or your life in the city?
I'm a member of the Chicago Curling Club, and I represented the state of Illinois in club national curling competition last year. I am a stay at home mom and I volunteer for Windy City Habitat for Humanity.  I also enjoy working out at Evolution Strength and Conditioning, playing video games, and making barbecue.

Are you a same sex parent and interested in meeting other families in the city? Join us on August 24th for a Farmer's Market Meet and Greet. RSVP here!

NPN loves bringing together parents and families with shared interests. We know as parents, how important it is to be part of a community. Do you want to be a part of our incredible volunteer team? Want to start your own group? Contact Amy Johnson
