Since NPN was founded in 1980, Parent to Parent Newsletter has been a fun way for parents to share their advice on how to navigate parenting in Chicago.  Thanks to Cindy McCarthy, founder of, for this great article - here is a glimpse. Download the full NPN summer issue to read more!

My hubby and I may have taken our own sweet time to have number one, but we didn’t waste any time having number two. We welcomed our second daughter less than 14 months after our first.  A few years into this adventure, I’ve learned that being a mom on the go with two in tow is not as hard as I feared. Here are some tips I’ve picked up:

Think positive and plan ahead. Like animals, kids can smell fear. When you start to feel overwhelmed, take a deep breath and remember you can do this.

Sibling-Friendly Classes and Activities– Non-crawlers are usually free. Once the second starts to move, look into sibling discounts and sibling-friendly classes:

  • Many indoor play spaces offer sibling discounts.
  • For a family of four, buy museum family memberships.
  • Check for sibling discounts and family classes when signing up for classes and camps.

Sibling-Friendly Restaurants

Favorite on the go products for enjoying the city with two

  • The monkey backpack/leash gives your toddler freedom, but you control.  Widely available at retailers around Chicago.
  • The Hold-On Handle available at Urba Baby attaches to your stroller and provides the perfect place for your walker to hold on.
  • Disposable coloring placemat is perfect for eating out, and is available at Babies R Us.
  • My second baby spent most of her first year in a sling, which kept my hands free to help/play with my toddler.
  • With two you need to bring double the stuff, so I recommend a big and backpack style diaper bag.
