Written by: Jenny Rowland

As a mom, does the word "summer" call to mind both joy and trepidation? Why not hire a babysitter and put your feet up for an afternoon or two each week? Summer sitters can be a welcome change for both parents and kids; someone young and energetic to splurge on ice cream and lead the charge to a museum or water park -- perfect!

When you find your perfect summer sitter, here are a few activities around town that the kids are sure to love.

  • Peggy Notebaert Nature Museum:  Activities and exhibits for all ages, including a butterfly house. Free admission for Illinois residents on Thursdays
  • Chicago Public Library Great Kids Museums Passport:  Good for two adults and two children for general admission to certain Chicago museums. Adults can check out passes at Chicago Public Library branches with a Chicago Public Library Card
  • Lincoln Park Zoo:  The Lincoln Park Zoo is one of the nation's oldest zoos housing over 1200 animals! There's also a children's zoo, carousel and paddle boats. And it's free, 365 days a year! For story times and sing-alongs, check the website.
  • Chicago Park District Water Playgrounds:  Water play on a hot, sunny day? Even older kids will love it. Check out their site for info. and locations.
  • Family Fun Festival at Millennium Park:  This year's Family Fun Festival will bel held June 13 - Aug. 21 at Millenium Park, every day from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Enjoy music, a reading circle, and visit the Family Fun Activity Zone, where each week has a new cultural theme so kids can learn more about Chicago and the world.
