Open Books - a bookstore doing so much more!

Written by: Curtis Flagg

Open Books is thrilled to be partnering with NPN and would like to tell you a little bit about ourselves.  We are a nonprofit social venture that operates a bookstore, provides community programs and mobilizes passionate volunteers to promote literacy in Chicago and beyond.

Did you know that 53% of adults in Chicago have low or limited literacy skills?

It is a shocking statistic, and it is our mission at Open Books to inspire children and teens to learn the fundamental skills along with a lifelong love of reading and writing. As parents, it is hard to imagine our little ones not learning to read and not being surrounded by books throughout their lives.

Open Books will be attending the upcoming NPN School Fairs.  We look forward to meeting you!

If you are coming to one of the NPN School Fairs:  This is the perfect excuse to clean out your book shelves, clear the clutter, and make a difference in Chicago!  If you have new or gently used books in your home and would consider donating them to us, we would greatly appreciate it!  We happily accept ALL book types, Fiction, Non Fiction, Cookbooks, Kids, Textbooks, Encyclopedias, etc.  All books can be sold in our store or online, or given to our program participants.

Here are three other options to get your used books to us :

  • At the Open Books store (perfect spot for a playdate!) - 213 W. Institute page - store hours only, please.
  • At the drop box - 1740 W. Webster Ave.
  • Fill out a form and have us pick them up!

Special Event: On October 15th and 16th (the same weekend as the NPN Preschool & Elementary School Fair) Open Books is having it's famous Open Boxes Sale!  Located at our warehouse location at 1740 W. Webster, we will be selling over 20,000 books at the cheapest prices!  Softcovers and Kids books are $2, Hardcovers are $3 OR fill and entire box for $30.  We invite you to come and shop AND support literacy in Chicago.
