NPN has a Group for That: Attorney Moms
Written by: Amy Johnson
Did you know that NPN has more than 30 special interest and neighborhood clubs? We thought we'd tell you a little about each of them over time. Please meet Jen, the lovely volunteer of our very active attorney moms group.
Tell us about you and your family.
I met my husband in 2003 at the Chicago Auto Show where he mistakenly got the impression that I was very into cars. We were married in May 2005, but instead of buying a car, we spent our time backpacking across Europe, surfing in Central America, and sailing the Florida Keys. We finally purchased our first car in 2009 when we had our son. Our daughter was born a few years later and we will be welcoming our third child this September.
Why did you start volunteering with NPN?
After my daughter was born, I wanted to meet other attorney moms to find out how they were juggling it all. I saw that there was an attorney moms group listed on the website, but no events were planned. When I wrote to find out about the group, NPN said the previous chair had stepped down. I took over the group and started organizing monthly happy hours.
Why should an attorney mom check out your group?
Juggling motherhood and working in law can be tough. It is nice to meet friendly faces each month who understand the delicate balance required to effective at home and at the office. There is no pressure to make events - everybody in the group knows how challenging scheduling can be and are always welcoming when the stars align and you are able to make it out to a happy hour!
What was your favorite event this year?
Each year the Attorney Moms group has a family event. Last year we went to the Cubs game and had a blast with many of the kids going to their first Cubs game. I'm looking forward to our family event this year too -- it will be at Ravinia in the end of August.
What is the best part about living in Chicago?
Everything. From amazing restaurants to a never-ending list of new shows opening, the city has it all. We love our family-friendly far south loop neighborhood, which not only has tons of parks, but is also walking distance to the Shedd, the Alder and the Field.
What do your kids like the most about summer in Chicago?
My kids love going to the beach and the many parks in our family-friendly far south loop neighborhood including Chicago Women's Park and Gardens, Coliseum Park and Cotton Tail Park.
I'd like to send a big hug and thank you to Jen and all of our other amazing volunteer chairs for making NPN so special. Want to check out a group for yourself? See the list here. Don't see a group that fits your interests and you'd like to start one? We can do that too! Comment below and we'll reach out to you :)
