3 Green Things to Pack for Spring Break

Written by: Jenny Perillo

April is officially here, which means I think it's safe to say Spring has arrived? April couldn't have come in with more of a bang, as the first weekend marks the beginning of holidays and Spring Break for many Chicago families. Before you head out the door with a million-and-one things in hand, here are some quick tips for greener traveling.

1. We love multitasking products in our family as they save on weight, space and "schtuff" in general. snackTAXI (see pic below) makes awesome reusable, food-safe sandwich bags that can double- even triple - up what you use them for. After our snacks are devoured we use them in the car for a washable mini-trash bag, or even as a quick, organized way to find my baby girls extra set of clothes when THAT happens. You can find them locally at Green Genes in Andersonville.

2. Sunscreen and Insect Repellent - This one is a common left behind item, and also one that is usually filled with not so green ingredients. As the weather gets warmer, or you head South, you'll definitely need these two for protection. When choosing an eco-friendly sunscreen look for a Zinc Oxide base and stay away from anything with parabens and oxybenzone in them. A new earth friendly insect repellent I am loving right now is made by Zoe Organics (see pic below). It uses natural essential oils like cedarwood, lemongrass, clove, thyme, rosemary and peppermint to stear away biters naturally.

3. Pack a water bottle! Whether you're headed to the heat or braving the crowds of holiday activities, having a water bottle on hand saves on purchases while you're out and also saves more toxic BPA plastic bottles from entering our landfills. Parks, museums and businesses are becoming more friendly to customers packing this resuable friend, so bring it along for when thirst hits. I love my BKR that has family friendly sizes, a silicone sleeve for easy gripping and is dishwasher safe (see pic below).
