3 Tips for Greener Beauty
Written by: Jenny Perillo
The beauty industry has a dirty little secret. A lot of your favorite products that you use on yourself and your little ones contain ingredients in them that are not good for our bodies or the planet. The average woman uses 9-15 different products per day that contain up to 100 different ingredients. I don’t think this average woman was a new mom, because that number for me shrunk to 1 - soap, after my daughter was born. I began my journey into a more natural world, thrown into it really, when I became allergic and sensitive to products I was using on a daily basis at work. I didn’t think I’d ever have to make a decision between my health or my paycheck. Luckily though that decision never came as I dove into researching how I could have both. Seven years later I’m now sharing my passion for green beauty everyday with women interested in how they can give their beauty products a makeover. The next time you are treating yourself to a much needed manicure or pedicure, or eyeing that perfect red that matches your new date night dress, keep these tips in mind to choose a healthier option for you and the planet.
1. Scrub - Exfoliation helps remove dead skin cells, smoothes calluses and gives your skin a healthy glow. Look for products with sugar or salt and not microbeads (aka. plastic) you can make an easy DIY Energizing Scrub with 2 TBL Sugar, 2 TBL Coffee Grounds and 2 TBL Grapeseed Oil. MAMA WIN: Coffee scrubs help breakdown cellulite and caffeine stimulates blood flow for firming and toning.
2. Rub - It’s important to hydrate after exfoliating to replace the oils you sloughed off. Look for a lotion that does not list alcohol in the first few ingredients or at all. Alcohol is drying and strips the skin of hydration, an oxymoron. Also steer clear of anything with parabens -iso, -methyl, -butyl, -propyl, they mimic estrogen in the body causing hormone disruption. When in doubt, leave it out.
3. Polish - Our favorite part! Just without the nasty chemicals please. Choose a polish that is labeled as 5-Free, if it’s Vegan as well, big bonus! 5-Free brands are made without Toluene, Dibutyl Phthalate, Formaldehyde, Formaldehyde Resin or Camphor. Not sure if your nail salon carries a 5-free line? Don’t be shy to BYOP - Bring Your Own Polish.
