Keep Your Little One Busy As a Bee With a "Busy Box"

What is a busy box? It is a box of 4 fun activities that can be re-used. The busy box contains 4 zip-lock activity bags. Each activity bag is filled with real-life objects that encourage fine-motor and sensory exploration. Many objects like cotton balls, spoons, cups, pasta, and sponges can be found around the house. The busy-box activities can encourage fun, purposeful exploration. It is influenced by the activities that I have seen in Montessori classrooms.

Who can use the busy box? ...

Parents - get organized in 30 minutes!

On a typical day parents are juggling many things: meals, activities, school, homework and keeping the house reasonably clean. In 30 minutes you can turn your home from a chaotic mess to something manageable.

Plan ahead for pint-sized indoor summer fun

If you’ve talked to anyone in Chicago this month, you know that the entire city is chomping at the bit for summer to arrive. Street fests, barbeques, zoo days, beach time…You name it; this city is the place to be when the temps turn warm.

What’s that you say? Rain? Bugs? Searing sun on the playground and sticky, tantrum-inducing mid-summer heat? Okay. We admit it. Sometimes our plans for outdoor fun get squelched by Mother Nature and we need a Plan B.

If your kids are 6-years-old...

How to speak with your parents about their estate plan

Estate planning is a topic that can be difficult for all of us. Even more difficult is approaching this topic with one’s own aging parents.  Perhaps there is a feeling that the parent will misconstrue the intent behind the conversation.  Or, maybe there are mixed feelings about whether it’s appropriate for the child to approach this topic because it signifies a role reversal in the relationship that the parents find disconcerting.  However, there are ways for adult children to lightly broa...
