Overcoming Obstacles & Reaching Dreams with 'Handicapable' Parents

Hello! My name is Melissa, and I am the proud mother of a beautiful eleven-month old boy named Aidan. I am also a forty year old woman who has lived with rheumatoid arthritis for most of my life. I was diagnosed with Juvenile Rheumatoid arthritis at seven years old and have had to overcome many obstacles to get where I am today.  Not long after my diagnosis, I became bedridden for more than a year and, therefore, was unable to attend school. My parents decided to take me to Mayo Clinic and...

Good Karma Creative Fundraising: Save Money or Raise it for Your School

Babies can be expensive. They can be little consumption engines. I have three little consumption engines myself, ages 8, 6 and 18 months, so I know this all too well.

The diapers, the baby food, the toys, the gear, the clothes–the clothes! Onesies, sleepers, play clothes, dressy clothes, holiday outfits, bibs, socks. And worst of all, many outfits they only wear two or three times and grow out of.

I love organic, well-made clothes (buying well-made clothes, furniture and other good...

Don't Fear Children's Fevers; They May Help Kids Heal

For children, fever is a normal response to illness. But for parents, it’s a major cause of anxiety and visits to the pediatrician.

Fever is a physiological mechanism that helps fight infection and is defined as a body temperature greater than 100.4 degrees F (38 degrees C).   In and of itself, fever is not known to endanger a generally healthy child and actually may benefit kids during acute illness.

Are fevers dangerous?

High temperatures do not always correlate wit...

Six Steps to an Easy Peasy Birthday Party

For some of us birthday’s can be headaches to organize. Here are some suggestions to make it a breeze:

First start with a guest list on evite. It’s easy to make attractive invitations and you can keep track of who is coming and find out food allergies in the mix.

Next, you can whip up some decorations fast and cheap. I like the dollar store or a party store for more options. Pick up plates, décor and napkins in one fell swoop. Another fun thing to add on are party favors...

Drawing a line for safety

It can be awkward to see moms in your play group or your in-laws engaging in unsafe child care practices or wanting to do something you don’t think is safe when your child is in their care. How should you handle this?
